Tips to Ace Your Next HireVue Interview

From preparing for the interview to answering the actual questions, here is everything you need to know.

Welcome to this week's edition of the The Job Seeker Hub Weekly Newsletter! This marks the final edition of our Interview Prep Series. With some 2025 summer internships recently opening up, we thought it would be perfect to wrap up the series with a focus on Hirevue interviews. Here's everything you need to know to ace your Hirevue interview and progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

What Are Hirevue Interviews, and Why Do Recruiters Use Them?

Hirevue interviews are digital interviews where candidates record their responses to pre-set questions. These interviews allow recruiters to assess a candidate’s skills, personality, and suitability for the role at their convenience. This method saves time, offers flexibility, and ensures a standardised evaluation process.

How to Prepare for the Interview

  1. Research the Company: Understand the company’s values, culture, and the specific role you are applying for. Follow the company on LinkedIn and other social media platforms to stay updated with the latest trends and news in the industry. Don’t be afraid to reach out to current employees on LinkedIn to learn more about their role in the company.

  2. Practice Common Questions: Familiarize yourself with common interview questions. Be prepared to answer "Tell me about yourself" (which we discussed in a previous edition) and "Why do you want to work for this company?" Expect to encounter commercial awareness and technical questions as well.

  3. Use the STAR Method: For competency-based questions, structure your answers using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). This helps you provide clear and concise answers.

  4. Mock Interviews: Conduct mock interviews to practice. You can practice in front of a mirror or by having a video meeting with yourself on Zoom or Teams. Record yourself to review your performance and identify areas for improvement. Practice extensively beforehand, and if you don't perform well on one question in the actual interview, move on and do your best on the next one.

Your Background, Body Language, and Outfit

  1. Background: Choose a quiet, well-lit location with a clean and neutral background. Make sure there are no distractions that could take away from your presence.

  2. Body Language: Sit up straight, maintain eye contact with the camera, and use natural hand gestures. Smile and show enthusiasm to convey confidence and engagement.

  3. Outfit: Dress professionally for an in-person interview. Depending on the company's culture, opt for business casual or formal attire. Avoid bright colours and distracting patterns.

How to Structure Your Answers

To structure your answers effectively, refer to our previous edition on competency-based, motivation-based, and strength-based interviews. Here are some key points to remember:

  1. Competency-Based Interviews: Use specific examples from your past experiences to demonstrate your skills and abilities. Remember the STAR method to keep your answers structured and impactful.

  2. Motivation-Based Interviews: Highlight your passion for the industry, the company, and the role. Be honest and specific about what drives you and how it aligns with the company's mission.

  3. Strength-Based Interviews: Focus on your natural strengths and how they make you a good fit for the role. Provide examples of when you have successfully used these strengths in previous experiences.
